Prepare now for the 100 Deadliest Days of Summer

As summer approaches, so does a particularly dangerous period on the American driving calendar. Known as the “100 Deadliest Days of Summer,” this term refers to the time between Memorial Day and Labor Day, when fatal traffic accidents—especially those involving teen drivers—significantly increase.

For teen drivers, their families and motorists across New York more broadly, now is the time to prepare, stay alert and take steps to reduce the risk of devastating crashes during the warmest months of the year.

Getting ready

According to national statistics, the combination of school being out, more drivers on the road and summer celebrations contributes to a spike in accidents. Inexperienced teen drivers are especially at risk during this period. More free time, nighttime driving, peer distractions and impaired driving all increase the likelihood of serious or fatal incidents. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has repeatedly emphasized the need for awareness and proactive safety efforts during this time as a result.

Preparation is, ultimately, very important. Parents should have open conversations with their teen drivers about the dangers of distracted driving, speeding and alcohol use. Setting curfews, limiting passengers and encouraging safe driving habits can make a meaningful difference. For all drivers, performing vehicle maintenance before summer road trips, staying rested and avoiding aggressive driving are simple but effective safety measures.

For cyclists, pedestrians and motorcyclists—who are more active during summer—the risks also rise. Drivers should remain vigilant, especially in urban and suburban areas where foot and bicycle traffic increases. Sharing the road responsibly can save lives.

Unfortunately, even the most cautious individuals can be harmed by another person’s recklessness. Should a serious accident occur despite a summer traveler’s best efforts, seeking legal guidance as soon as possible is a wise way to protect an injury victim’s rights and broader interests.
