3 tips on how to deal with aggressive drivers

On Behalf of | Dec 31, 2018 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Dealing with angry drivers can be scary. When someone tailgates you, cuts you off or starts yelling at you, you may have no idea how to react. Aggressive motorists may make it more likely for you to be in an accident, and then direct their anger toward you for it.

The key to handling a hot-headed driver is controlling your reactions. While you may not be able to control how the other person is acting, you are in charge of your own behaviors. Utilize these tips to respond to aggressive motorists.

1. Do not make gestures

When a driver zips right in front of you, your first instinct may be to flash your lights, honk your horn or throw your hands in the air. While it is understandable to have this urge, you may provoke the reckless driver to be more dangerous. He or she may hear you honk and become even more aggressive. If another driver does something that inconveniences you or makes you angry, the best thing to do is stay calm.

2. Avoid eye contact

Drivers who are full of aggression often thrive off of feeling frustration or anger. If they notice any sign of you challenging their superiority, it may send them to the boiling point. Resist the impulse to give an offending motorist a nasty look.

3. Pull over and get help if necessary

Sometimes, you may be unable to diffuse a situation or get away from an angry motorist. If you feel like you or someone else is in danger because of a belligerent driver, you may need to pull to the side of the road and call 911. Calling the police is especially necessary if you ever get into a collision with an aggressive driver.

Some people seem to be angry all the time–particularly when it comes to driving. These guidelines can help you stay safe and peaceful amidst a stressful situation.
