Inclement weather and traffic accident risks

On Behalf of | Oct 30, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Inclement weather can make driving challenging and dangerous. It is crucial for all drivers, regardless of their experience, to understand the risks associated with driving in bad weather conditions.

Drivers should go over the various weather-related factors that contribute to car accidents and tips on how to stay safe on the road.

Rainy conditions

Rain makes the roads slippery, reducing tire traction and making it harder for drivers to maintain control of their vehicles. Hydroplaning, when a vehicle’s tires lose contact with the road due to water buildup, is a common occurrence during heavy rain. It is important to slow down, increase following distance and avoid sudden maneuvers to prevent accidents in rainy conditions.

The Federal Highway Administration says that each year, over 544,700 people suffer injuries in traffic accidents on wet pavement, and more than 357,300 become hurt in crashes while it is raining.

Snow and ice

Snow and ice can create treacherous driving conditions. Driving on snowy or icy roads requires extra caution and preparation. Vehicles can easily lose traction, making it difficult to stop or maneuver. Keeping a safe distance from other vehicles and reducing speed can help prevent accidents. Additionally, using snow tires, ensuring proper tire pressure and clearing all snow and ice from the vehicle before driving are essential safety measures to minimize the risks associated with winter driving.

In addition to rain, snow and ice, many accidents occur during foggy weather and strong wind can also increase the chances of a crash. Sometimes, it is a good idea to avoid driving until weather conditions improve.
