E-scooters and traffic collisions

On Behalf of | Oct 4, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

E-scooters have become a popular mode of transportation in many cities. They are fun and convenient, but it is important to realize the risks involved.

E-scooters are small and nimble, making them great for zipping through traffic. However, their size also makes them less visible to other drivers. Additionally, e-scooters can reach high speeds, making it harder for riders to react quickly to unexpected situations on the road.

Collisions with cars

One of the most significant dangers of e-scooters is the risk of colliding with cars. E-scooter riders are vulnerable on the road, and if they get hit by a car, the injuries can prove severe. Riders can become thrown off their scooters, resulting in broken bones, head injuries and even internal injuries.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission states that e-scooter accidents led to 25,400 emergency department visits in 2020.

Other accident risks

E-scooters can become unstable, especially when navigating uneven roads or encountering obstacles. If a rider loses balance or hits a pothole, they could suffer from fractures or broken bones. Also, texting, talking on the phone or listening to loud music can take the rider’s attention away from the road, making them more susceptible to collisions or falls.

It is important for riders to stay cautious and follow traffic rules to minimize the risk of accidents. Wearing protective gear, such as helmets and knee pads, can help reduce the risk of injuries in such situations. Additionally, both e-scooter riders and car drivers should recognize each other’s presence on the road to prevent collisions and ensure everyone’s safety.
