Speed camera expansion has promising results, but worries persist

On Behalf of | Sep 14, 2023 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

Speeding has long been a problem in Brooklyn and across New York City. Law enforcement can only be in so many places at one time and it can be difficult to catch speeding drivers. However, with advanced technology, positive results can be achieved.

The city has installed “speed cameras” at various locations where drivers tend to exceed the speed limit. In the past, these cameras were not deployed 24 hours a day, seven days a week. In 2022, that changed. This has shown promise for keeping people safer. Despite that, many drivers still ignore the speed limits and the consequences.

Speed camera violations reduced significantly

The 24/7 speed camera activation went into effect on Aug. 1, 2022. Before that, they could only be activated between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m. Since the roads are emptier in the overnight hours, drivers might have used that as an opportunity to speed.

Specific areas that were known for speeders saw substantial improvement. For example, Cropsey Avenue had an 84% decline in speeding citations. North Conduit Boulevard had a 74% drop. For overnight injuries, Kings Highway had a reduction of one-third.

There were 30% fewer speed violations throughout the city. Fatalities declined by one-quarter. The recent health crisis was also viewed as a contributing factor to drivers speeding as there was fewer people on the road and law enforcement was not as aggressive in targeting drivers who violated the law.

Even with these advancements, dangers still exist. The spike in people who are riding e-scooters and bicyclists and ignore traffic rules are leading to people being injured and losing their lives. Often, it is difficult to identify and catch these violators. Regardless of the safety enhancements, simply taking to the road puts people at risk.

Speeding still causes accidents

Although the speed cameras are clearly dissuading drivers from going beyond the speed limit, this does not mean that people should stop being vigilant. Drivers who speed are unlikely to stop doing so, particularly on roads where no speed cameras are stationed to catch them.

A vehicle’s speed has a direct link to the severity of the injuries people can suffer when there is a crash. This is a key component in determining what steps to take to cover for all that was lost. That includes medical expenses, lost income, long-term care and more. After any auto accident, it is important to gather evidence to provide a host of options for a full recovery.
