How can you keep safer when driving this Labor Day?

While Labor Day 2020 is fast approaching, for most regions of the country, this year's celebration will likely be quite different. But that doesn't mean that Brooklyn residents need to stay at home to be safe.

According to their estimates, the National Safety Council (NSC) stated that 390 fatalities may occur in motor vehicle accidents over the upcoming holiday weekend from Friday evening to Monday night. That's a number to which you definitely don't want to contribute.

The dangers of driving

But the fact is that driving is inherently the most deadly of all types of transportation. When compared to deaths per mile for passengers, your risk of dying in a wreck is highest when you travel by car.

Reducing your risk

Buckle up, and insist all passengers do the same before ever turning the key on the engine. It's been proven in multiple research studies that properly wearing your seat belt can be 45% effective in saving the lives of those in the front seat. It's estimated that 154 people might survive crashes just over the Labor Day weekend alone if they wear seat belts.

Nearly 40% of the highway deaths over past Labor Day weekends have involved alcohol impairment. As with the other summer holidays of Memorial Day and the Fourth of July, alcohol often features prominently in people's Labor Day celebrations. These holidays traditionally have higher average fatality rates per day than the winter holidays of Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's Day.

It's fine to indulge in a few drinks this upcoming holiday. But you need to have a plan for getting home that doesn't involve driving.

Be aware of other drunk drivers

You could be sober as a judge and driving back from a weekend down the shore with your family when you have the misfortune of getting struck by a drunk driver. Being aware of your surroundings and the actions of other motorists as you drive can sometimes allow you to avoid a nasty accident.

Take swift action after an accident

Sometimes, no matter how safely you drive, accidents caused by other motorists can be unavoidable. When that occurs, you need to seek treatment for your injuries and then compensation for your damages and losses.
