What’s so dangerous about driving in the summer?

On Behalf of | May 22, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

The summer is a time for many to get out and enjoy the nice, warm weather and experience fun times with friends and family. It can be a dangerous time of the year to be a motorist though.

It’s in places like New York that have extreme winters that the summer becomes a construction season. Road closures and detours are common during this time of the year. You have to be on the lookout for construction crews working. You also have to be vigilant for any debris left out on the road. You may end up in an accident if you don’t notice these.

Tire blowouts are more common in the summer than at any other time of the year. Increased temperatures may cause tires to deflate and hot roadways can cause them to burst.

People are likely to be off work and the kids out of school during the summer. This may result in an uptick of pedestrians along the roadway. It also increases the amount of daytime driving.

Bicyclists and motorcyclists tend to emerge more when the weather is nice outside. Motorists must be careful to check their blind spots when changing lanes so that they don’t strike them.

Engines are more likely to overheat in the summer. This can increase the number of car breakdowns and stranded motorists. Younger, less experienced drivers are more likely to be out on the road during the summer. They’re more likely to engage in distracted driving, a behavior that can easily result in a crash.

Weather can be quite unpredictable during the summer. There may be flash floods, hail and rain. The sun may cause severe glare. Inexperienced motorists may not know how to adjust their driving to changing weather conditions such as these.

Just because the summer days are longer doesn’t mean your ability to stay awake longer increases. Drowsy driving is also common during the summer. Motorists who drive while fatigued are more likely to have a car crash.

While driving in the summer is dangerous, it’s an activity that can be risky at any time of the year. Many individuals are lucky enough to walk away from a crash unscathed. Others aren’t so lucky. An attorney can help you recover the compensation that you’re sure to need if you’ve been seriously hurt in a collision on the streets of Brooklyn.
