Types of Paralysis

A person injured in an accident may suffer partial or complete paralysis:

• Partial paralysis occurs when some portion of your muscle movements are hindered or damaged. Usually the victim loses muscle coordination in the legs, but can still move his or her arms and upper torso. In more rare cases, the victim can move one side of the body, but not the other.
• Complete paralysis is characterized by a complete loss of motor function in either the arms or the legs, or both. There is little or no muscle sensation below the site of the injury. If the injury is severe enough, the person may lose near complete control over his or her body, requiring extensive medical intervention to breathe, eat and communicate.

Other types or paralysis include:

• Monoplegia: This is paralysis of one limb, such as the arm. It is commonly caused by Cerebral palsy, nerve trauma and brain tumors.
• Diplegia: This describes the loss of motor function in two limbs, such as both arms. It can be caused by Cerebral palsy, spinal cord injury and trauma to the head or spine.
• Facial paralysis: Characterized by the loss of muscle function in the face, facial paralysis can be caused by birth trauma, untreated infections and mistakes during surgery.
