Brooklyn company fined, cited in worker's 2019 death

A Brooklyn construction company faces fines for safety violations after a worker died in a building collapse last November. SP&K Construction owes over $77,000 in fines for the 11 safety violations for which the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) cited them after last year's deadly debacle. The construction accident occurred in Brighton Beach and cost a worker his life.

On Nov. 8, 2019, the construction crew was onsite pouring concrete when suddenly three floors of the building collapsed, trapping and killing the hapless worker.

After an extensive review of the scene and the circumstances of the collapse, OSHA made the following determinations of problems:

  • Improper alignment of the building's exterior walls
  • Insufficient bracing of the building's scaffolding
  • Improper bracing of structural framing of the building

The safety agency found that the above factors caused and contributed to the worker's death.

Construction work is inherently dangerous work. But that does not mean that workers should not be fully protected to the extent possible by their employers. When employers fail to provide safety protections and abide by industry standards to keep their workers free from harm, the injured workers and the survivors of those who are killed have the right to seek financial compensation for their losses and damages.

The problem is that often these companies will put up every roadblock that they can to prevent having to pay out expensive settlements. Those affected may need to seek the counsel of experienced attorneys who can handle and process their claims for damages and work hard to get their clients the financial settlements that they both need and deserve.
