Drivers, passengers and bystanders, all at risk for injury

On Behalf of | Feb 19, 2020 | Motor Vehicle Accidents

A vehicle accident can happen in an instant in Brooklyn, and with devastating results.

Often, the negligent driver is simply not paying attention, but there are many other reasons that vehicle crashes occur.

A midday joy ride

In January 2020, a man caused a high-speed crash. He T-boned another vehicle at a Brooklyn intersection, causing it to smash into a couple of parked cars. The negligent driver and two passengers in the car he hit suffered injuries. Witnesses to the crash tried to free the passengers in the wrecked car, but the doors were jammed. Emergency responders were finally able to get the injured people out of their car and took them to a local hospital. Police discovered that a wallet found in possession of the joyriding driver belonged to another man, and so did the car. A police report confirmed that the negligent driver stole the Honda Civic only hours before the crash.

A look at numbers

The New York Police Department keeps a detailed report of vehicle crashes that take place in each area of the city. For example, in January 2020, there were four collisions in Brooklyn at the intersection of Nixon Court and West Street. Police determined that a distracted driver caused two of the accidents and that the other two occurred because a negligent driver was passing too closely. Fortunately, there were no injuries in any of these collisions. However, one statistic that stands out as you look through the report is how often a vulnerable pedestrian is the victim of a vehicle accident.

An important next step

After any kind of vehicle crash, you should seek medical attention. Even if the crash is a minor fender-bender, a diagnosis is essential because you may have underlying injuries. A major crash, such as the T-boning incident from January 2020 in Brooklyn, can leave victims with extremely serious injuries, such as broken bones, spinal injuries or brain damage. If there is a bright side to such an experience, it is that as a vehicle crash victim, whether driver, passenger or bystander, you have a right to expect full and fair financial compensation to cover your current and future medical expenses and more.
