How AI could help reduce distracted driving

Brooklyn residents may be wondering what can be done about distracted driving. Road signs and public service announcements are telling everyone about the dangers of distracted driving, yet many drivers do it anyway. As a result, distracted drivers are behind more and more accidents. Every day in this country, such accidents claim the lives of nine people and injure about 100 people.

Car makers have relied on visual monitoring systems to combat distracted driving, but there is still room for improvement. One problem is that these systems may not recognize all forms of distraction. Another is that the alerts they give off can be ignored as part of the background noise. This is where artificial intelligence can be beneficial.

Researchers are trying to incorporate the mechanics of deep learning and the advances in computer vision technology and algorithms into these monitoring and alert systems. Such systems may eventually be able to predict all human behavior in the car. Visual AI can also help build use cases, allowing researchers to pinpoint new sources of distraction and find ways to alert drivers about them.

If AI is successfully integrated with these systems, they may become standard for all vehicles. Automatic emergency braking and forward collision warning systems are proven to be effective and will become standard by 2020.

Drivers cannot rely too much on safety features, though; they still have a responsibility to keep their car under control. If they fail in this responsibility and cause motor vehicle crashes, then this could provide the other side with a chance to file a personal injury claim. With New York being a no-fault state, there are limits as to who can file, so victims may want to consult with an attorney. An attorney may assist with negotiations and more.
