Not All Motorists Are Insured

Know Your Rights If You Are Injured By An Uninsured Or Underinsured Driver

Para español

Most people wrongly assume that every driver on the road is covered by automobile insurance. Unfortunately, that is not always the case, but that does not necessarily mean that if you are in an accident with a motorist who is uninsured or underinsured that you will not be compensated for your injuries. New York States UM/SUM insurance coverage is designed to help injured motorists and passengers in such situations.

UM/SUM, which stands for Uninsured/Supplemental Uninsured Motorist coverage, protects you and family members from motorists who either don’t have insurance coverage or whose coverage limits are too low to compensate you for your injuries.

All New York State motor vehicles are required to have a minimum amount of UM/SUM coverage, usually $25,000 per person / $50,000 per accident. But is that really enough? Most insurance companies won’t tell you this, but your UM/SUM coverage should be equal to your regular liability coverage.

If your policy insures others up to $100,000 or $300,000 in case you cause injuries, why should you be at risk from a driver covered only up to $50,000? It does not cost much to increase your UM/SUM coverage to an amount equal to your liability coverage; in fact, its one of the least expensive insurances in New York State!
